Social movements were lacking a way to reach consensus between the various participants, but DAOs might just be the missing piece of the puzzle!
Let’s say you’re an activist who passionately cares about a cause. You would like to enact meaningful change, but the problem is that modern protests and social movements have disillusioned you.
After all, movements like Occupy Wallstreet and Extinction Rebellion can bring people together, but then once they’re out on the streets it tends to break down pretty quickly. The movements often get accused of running around like headless chickens, as if you ask a hundred people in the protests what exactly they’re trying to accomplish, you’ll get a hundred different responses and no clear policies.
But what if there was a way to organize in such a way that you still retain that grassroots, leaderless structure while being able to meaningfully pursue goals?
Luckily for you, this is exactly what Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), digital communities that operate on blockchain technology and make communal decisions, are able to address.
DAOs can be structured in such a way that everyone within a community gets a say, and users can issue proposals that get voted on. Then, once voted, if they are accepted, they get incorporated as part of the group of governing rules.
In other words, this structure allows you to have leadership while remaining leaderless. You will be able to meaningfully make sense of the great collective wishes and make concrete proposals that bind the whole community, and thereby be able to have meaningful representation.
However, there might be the case that the group gets too big, at which point not everyone could issue a proposal, as this would quickly get unmanageable. This is also something that DAOs can easily address, as you can preset the voting parameters so that only proposals with X number of signatures get to be put to a vote once the community grows. Or you could also make it so that only people who have participated in protests get a say in what the community’s goals ought to be.
This is the key missing puzzle in modern social movements, as before this technology people had megaphones via social media but no way to meaningfully make sense of the noise. DAOs will allow for order to emerge from disorder and may yet be able to fundamentally change society for the better.
